Hi everyone. How are you doing? Finally I have plenty of time to catch
up with my blog. It has been a long time since I didn´t publish on Fridays.
Anyway, it is raining heavily (it´s ten past three in the afternoon) and rain
is always inspiring for me.
"SMALL THINGS THAT MAKE OUR WORLD WONDERFUL". This has been
the topic of debate in class during the last couple of weeks. But now I realize
that I haven´t posted anything related to it.
While I write this,
I´m watching through the window how rain falls all over the city. I cannot
describe the feeling I get when I look up into the sky and see that it is about
to rain. Joy? Pleasure? Satisfaction?. Well, I don´t know. The only thing I
know for sure is that I love rainy days (I ´ve said DAYS not WEEKS, haha). What
I really like about the rain? Many things, for example:
I really love that humid, fresh and powerfully evocative
scent of rain. It always brings back a lot of memories from my childhood, especially
from my Summer holidays, when I was just a little kid playing around.
This is
the most relaxing and comforting sound I have ever heard. There is no music or melody
that can be compared to the sound of rain during the night. Sometimes, when I
wake up in the middle of the night and find out that it is raining, I let the
window partly open so as to hear the rain falling and placidly fall asleep.
I
love being wrapped in a blanket, wearing my pyjamas, while I sit on a bench in
front of my bedroom´s huge window to appreciate how rain falls. Of course a big
cup of coffee and good music cannot be absent. Being able to appreciate this outstanding phenomenon is really inspiring and peaceful
People
who are really close to me know how much I love reading. Books are the only
thing I would spend a lot of money in. But reading your favourite book on a
rainy day has no comparison at all with reading a book in a common day. It seems
that all my senses and my mind are more active and permeable when I read on a
rainy day, and therefore I can understand the story with a totally different
perspective.
I
believe that this is one of the smallest pleasures that is for free to anyone.
I know that many people hate rain because they cannot do many of the activities
they have planned or simply because they cannot stand the fact that a rainy day
implies staying at home or stuck in a place. Well, those people should open up
their mind and see all the great things that rain brings. And of course we
should all be grateful and appreciate that we still have rainy days. There are
some places in which rain represents only an impossible dream.
HAVE
A NICE WEEKEND :)

I love the smell of rain too, and I don't know exactly what it makes me feel, just mixed feelings like you do. What your post reminded me was a Word I found some time ago, and I wanted to share it with you: "Petrichor, the name for the smell of rain on dry ground, is from oils given off by vegetation, absorbed onto neighboring surfaces, and released into the air after a first rain." It is a good description, don't you think so?
ReplyDeleteYESSSS, I agree with you Nadya!!! I used to hate rainy days when I lived in Buenos Aires, but now I love them! Each item you have mentioned, I totally agree with them. Whenever I hear the sound of the rain, I immediately run next to the windows just to see the rain falling and then perceive the smell of it. This has become my new habit, haha!
ReplyDeleteI love rainy days. I don't care if I get wet (as long as I don't have important papers in my hands, of course) I just love it.
ReplyDeleteAll the senses are at stake: listening to the sound of rain, smelling that unique fragance, watching people enjoying and smiling or hating the fact of getting wet and the most pleasant one, feeling how every single raindrop touches your skin. Just great!
It is really nice what you described, Nadya. I like rainy days as well (though I hate the lightnings, they scare me because they foreshadow how the thunder is going to be like and that kind of freaks me out! haha). I think that rainy days are really special. They bring this kind of sad atmosphere in the air, but, at the same time, it also brings peace, and quietness and you feel like you can relax. Reading a good book and taking a great nap on rainy days is priceless. But, watching a movie, wrapped in a blanket, for me, has no comparison at all!! It is just amazing!! I like those rainy days!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good analysis of how to enjoy rainy days. I also love them. I love the sound and the smell as you mentioned. And it is also important to appreciate the fact that it rains. As you stated it does not happen so frequently in other parts of the world and there are severe consequences with long periods of drought. Well, I really liked your reflections about rain. So much to say about this natural phenomenon.
