HI EVERYONEH :) How was your weekend? Fine, I hope!
What is the point in studying so hard? Probably if someone would have
asked me this question a week before I would have probably said: “Well, if I do not study hard I will not get
my degree this year. And that means spending another year studying and making
my parents pay the rent for me”. Now, after an incident that I went through
these days, my perspective has completely changed.
Probably you wonder why I decided to give my post the name “Portrait of
a silent killer”. Of course the post is not directed to someone but to
SOMETHING. I decided to give my post this title because STRESS represents the
perfect portrait of an inner and silent juggernaut that may kill us if we do
not control it.
How many hours a day do we sleep in order to study for a test, do the
homework, read a novel, plan our lesson plans, etc? Not so many, I believe. But
we are so eager to get our degree that most of the times we forget about one of
the simplest and most important aspects in our life: HEALTH.
So, what is the point in getting the best mark or catching up with every
subject that we have, if at the end of the day our own health is in danger?
Our human body represents perfection. It can bear the weight of almost everything,
it allows us to move around, it can withstand pain and suffering and heal from
one day to the other. But our body is also really wise. Whenever something is
wrong with it, it warns us so as to pay attention and change our lifestyles.
Going to university and getting a degree is one of the most important
steps in our lives. And of course, it implies a lot of effort and sacrifice on
the part of the student. But that does not necessarily mean that the road must
be painful and vexatious. On the contrary, we should enjoy a little bit more
what we are doing. Putting all your energy into books and homework is not a guarantee
of extreme intelligence. Is a guarantee of letting STRESS rule over our bodies
and minds. It is impossible to study or do everything in one night. Being awake
the whole night is not a solution. Lack of rest only aggravates the problem.
Spending some hours doing something different is a great solution. We
should give ourselves a break from time to time in order to let our bodies and
minds relax. Under no circumstance should we overwhelm ourselves by fretting
about exams or every single task we have to fulfill. We should try to set our
priorities and work on them day by day.
Studying is one of the most brilliant capacities that we, as human beings,
have. But that does not mean that it
should make our lives miserable. It is essential to keep a balance between
studies and a healthy life. Do not let this “silent killer” take advantage
from our situation.

I really loved your post Nadya, it was thought provoking and down to earth. I would like to add that this silent juggernaut ( I love this word) will not only be present in your, our lives as students, but also in future stages of our lives. it is just that it is going to encounter us stronger and wiser...
ReplyDeleteHow useful your comment today, Nadya!! It is true that stress kills us without noticing it! I know it by heart: I tend to feel panic everytime I have to enter the Courtroom. Statistically I can say it happens after the middle of the year. So, it is really stress, the product of work throughout the whole term.
DeleteIn my case, studying is my therapy: it is the thing I do to relax. When I am at IFDC, I feel young again, I feel I am a student. And in fact, I AM young again, I really do not feel it, I am! Then I have to go back and work, and work. Harder and Harder.
My husbands always says I have to take things differently, and I am trying nowadays. I try to apply the rule "live the present moment" (Chiara Lubich). If we live every present moment, our life is going to be fruitful and less hard.
Nadya: I think it's really interesting what you posted and you're absolutely right in your reflection! Many times we get so stressed and anxious that we do not realize that we need to stop for a little bit so as just to "breathe". It is also important to dedicate some time to something that can help us get disconnected from our everyday's duties. It could be whatever, it may take a few minutes, but those minutes can help us get refreshed and even have more energies so as to continue doing the things we have to do. As I told you some days ago, we should all follow Mika's advice: Relax! Take it easy!! ;)
